Alpha Associates Wins Awards
Alpha Associates, Incorporated of Morgantown and Martinsburg, West Virginia were recently awarded a Gold Award in the Transportation category at the 2008West Virginia Engineering Excellence Award Competition that took place recently in Charleston.
The award was presented to Alpha for its design of the Runway Safety Area Extension for the City of Morgantown/ Morgantown Municipal Airport. Many airports in West Virginia present challenges related to runway length. The Morgantown Municipal Airport is no exception. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) under the direction of Congress implemented a program to require all part 139 airports to improve runway safety through addition of adequate safety areas. Part 139 airports are airports with airline service. One area of emphasis was to improve the available area for airplane runoff at the end of runways. For the Morgantown Municipal Airport this would require the addition of approximately 800 feet long by 500 feet wide flat area beyond the runway as a runoff area.
The RSA project for the Morgantown Municipal Airport was a multi-phase, multi-agency project that was completed over a five year period. This project was vital to the continued development of the Morgantown Municipal Airport and the surrounding community. The total costs of the project were in excess of $12,000,000 and will enable the airport to continue to develop.
This project combined a large amount of excavation and embankment, a required stream relocation, erosion and sediment control and relocation of the instrument landing system for the airport. An additional benefit to the project is the development of a future technology park that will serve the airport and the City of Morgantown for years for come.
